A to Z Family History

Chris and Tim ZubalFour generations of masonry excellence built A to Z Masonry. In 1908, John Zubal, Sr. immigrated to the United States from war torn Croatia. He left his home country as an apprentice stone mason. Unable to speak English, John Sr. found employment in the local coal mines. Due to his experience with mason tools, John began laying concrete blocks to shore up ceilings in the mine. He then worked a contract with the mines to make and supply insulated concrete form blocks.

With this business, John put his four boys to work where they all gained masonry artisan experience. One of the boys perished in WWII and the other three, including John Jr., became interested in the trade.

John Jr.’s son, Tim, worked for his father and his uncles after high school and on other masonry crews to gain diverse experience. After a few years at the steel mill in the brick department, Tim desired to be a contractor.

A third generation in the business, Tim began his own company after 13 years in a contracting partnership. A to Z Masonry began in 2002 and his son, Chris, joined him in the family partnership in 2005 after completing his bachelor’s degree in business.
